Problem
Spotify is great at getting users to think globally, but not act locally. While users can find artists from all around the world, it can be difficult to discover smaller, local artists.
Opportunity
Create a new feature for the Spotify mobile app that serves as a user's passport to their local music scene.
City & Me Playlist - Mixes songs you already love and songs you have yet to discover from local artists.
City-ology Playlist - Takes the historical legends of your Spot and combines them into one cohesive playlist. This gives users a option to not only discover new music, but enrich themselves in the Spot’s culture.
Locally Curated Playlists
Sister Spots are weekly changing features that pair your Spot with another from around the world. Similarities can be: geographic, shared cultures, shared musical taste, and much more. This gives users an opportunity to see what Spots from all over have in common with theirs.
Sister Spots
Users are able to search any spot in the world and go to their central hub. Vacationing in London? Moving to Dublin? Curious about Cairo? Head to their spot to see what they are listening to!
Listen Around the World
With Spot, users can finally cut through the massive array of music options, and re-discover their community. The feature is also scale-able globally so users can not only listen to their local favorites, but favorites from around the globe.
Conclusion
Features
My team and I wanted a way to allow users to understand their local music scene better, while also promoting smaller artists.
In doing so, we hoped that this would cause a symbiotic relationship between users and artists in a place where Spotify lacks - promoting smaller artists.
But we didn't want to just stop there, we wanted to allow users to understand the history and influential artists that inspired the music of their home.
With the creation of the new Spot Hub, users can explore playlists, artists, events, and even different places in the world that have similar music scenes.
